The exhibit will remain on display throughout the month of April. \nMargot will be present for a book signing and informal conversation about her artwork and conservation work. Staff and volunteers from A Frog House will also showcase the prototype of the Build Your Own Vernal Pond (BYVP) kit and explain how small backyard wetlands support amphibians\, biodiversity\, and climate resilience. \nLive music will be provided by Bonnie Abrams\, featuring selections inspired by frogs\, wetlands\, and the natural world. Corby Arboretum and Wildlife Sanctuary to create a Permaculture Sustainable Tiny Food Forest. \n\n\nProject approved by: Village of Pittsford Board of Trustees \n\n\nDesigned by: Patty Love\, founder of Barefoot Permaculture \n\n\nFunded by: $500 Pittsford Garden Club grant + $1500 support from A Frog House \n\n\nThe garden will be planted at the top of the path linking the new lower vernal pond with the new upper meadow ponds\, creating a beautiful focal point for visitors. \nDress for the weather\, bring a hat\, sunscreen and bug spray if you need them. \nWork Schedule\nSeptember 30: 1–5 pm\nBring a large bucket\, garden gloves\, shovels\, trowels\, kneeling pads. \n\n\nContinue to dig out roots of dried weeds \n\n\nPick up the rocks under these roots \n\n\nMark planting holes with cardboard and spikes \n\n\nIf soil is gravelly\, dig pockets 12–18 inches deep and stockpile gravel separately. \n\n\nStart to name cardboard pieces with markers to match our design \n\n\nOctober 3: 10 am to 5 pm\nwith Broccolo Lawn and Landscape founder and owner Laurie Broccolo herself \nBring preferably a wheelbarrow or large bucket\, garden gloves\, shovels\, trowels\, kneeling pads. \n\n\nDelivery of topsoil compost mixture and mulch. \n\n\nSpread topsoil compost mixture. \n\n\nLay down named cardboard pieces at marked planting sites \n\n\nDouble-check spacing. \n\n\nCut X-shaped slits through cardboard at each planting spot\, reflag \n\n\nStage plants near flagged holes (in pots). \n\n\nFill each planting hole with compost or topsoil. \n\n\nMix lightly with native soil to avoid pot effect. \n\n\nWater soil pockets to settle them. \n\n\nPlant shrubs and perennials. \n\n\nFirm soil around roots. \n\n\nWater deeply after planting. \n\n\nFill in empty areas with pieces of cardboard \n\n\nApply 2–3 inches of hardwood mulch around each plant. \n\n\nKeep mulch 2–3 inches away from stems. \n\n\nWater again. \n\n\nPUT UP FENCING\nOctober 4\, 5\, 7: 1–5 pm\n\n\nWalk site to check plants\, watering\, and mulch coverage. \n\n\nAdjust stakes\, labels\, or flags. \n\n\nTake photos for records and share with partners. \n\n\nFuture Dates tbd \nWhere to Meet\nEntrance at red tear drop. Supplies limited. \nWe might have the following tables up all day all weekend\, depending on the weather\, but definitely on Saturday\, be set up by 10:30 am in between the Pickle Factory Road and Village Lane\, and plan to break down at 2. \n\nSAVE THE FROGS! table\, where you might meet Michael Horton and Kelly Geer\, visitors from Virginia\, where they both worked in and taught Fish and Wildlife Conservation Services\, and now are active entrepreneurs and community leaders.\nA Frog House Table Many of our core volunteers will rotate\n\nPond Building: You must be strong enough to do this and at least 18 years old\, unless you are exceptionally fit. Wear heavy clothing\, sturdy shoes\, heavy gloves\, and please bring your own hardhat\, if you have one\, although we have some to share. Also bring shovels and rakes. \nPlanting and Seeding: As soon as the first pond is ready\, we will be spreading wheat seed\, and a mixture of rye\, grasses\, bullrush\, and sedge. We also have several hundred small plant plugs\, including 10 native plant pollinators that love wetlands\, and 36 buttonbush trees. Not all are available at this exact time\, so we will be coming back. Once seeded and planted\, we will be spreading straw mulch on the area to protect it. Corby Arboretum and Wildlife Sanctuary\, as well as a description of the work day and the talents and skills he knows will be needed \nYou are a stakeholder\, and we need and want your input. In a round table discussion\, you will have the opportunity to introduce yourself\, ask questions\, name your interests\, pick the designs and plants you most want\, and identify just how you want to be included. \nIf you love nature and are concerned about the environment\, you already know that vernal ponds have many benefits\, including safe breeding for amphibians and invertebrates (both of which will consume the mosquitos!)\, maintaining biodiversity for plants and animals\, climate change resilience with a cooling affect\, supporting ecosystem health with nutrient cycling\, water filtration and flood control\, and providing educational and research opportunities. \nFrom this perspective\, everyone is a stakeholder. Photo Credits\, Unknown. \n\n\nThanks to Mayor Plummer and the Village Board of Trustees\, we are happy to welcome wetlands expert Tom Biebighauser to Pittsford Village Hall on April 18 when Tom will give a presentation on Restoring Wetlands to Save The Frogs.\n\n\nFrogs and other life forms (including humans) are entirely dependent on riparian wetlands.\n\n\nWetlands play a vital role in supporting frog populations by providing essential breeding habitats\, food resources\, water availability\, migration corridors\, habitat connectivity\, and ecosystem services. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving and restoring riparian wetlands are therefore crucial for the long-term survival of frog species and life worldwide.\n\n\nTom teaches that when building a wetland\, it’s crucial to identify and disable expensive high maintenance historic drainage features for success. Tom\, through methodical research spanning centuries and hands-on experience with seniors in wetland draining\, can identify over 50 signs indicating past wetland topography. His inexpensive techniques for restoration of more than 10\,000 wetlands have proven highly successful\, improving habitats for even rare species.\n\n\nSome think that wetland restoration is the single most important activity anyone can undertake for saving our environment and climate change.  Even having a small frog pond in your back yard can help!\n\n\nIf you would like to see and hear Tom in person\, seating at Village Hall is limited but still available.\n\n\nOr you may join by Zoom.  We will send the Zoom link on the day of the meeting.\n\n\nTom also will lead a wetlands tour on Friday\, April 19 at 3:30 pm.  Gather at the entrance to the Town Erie Canal Nature Preserve at the tow path\, where we will be joined by important town and village leaders to see highlights Tom will point out along the way through the Preserve and on to the Village Arboretum and Wildlife Sanctuary.  Then we will schedule another meeting by zoom when he has put together his findings and recommendations for all to hear.\n\n\nThis is why A Frog House is so excited about the upcoming visit from Tom. Hailing from Haiti\, he graduated with a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology\, Recreation\, and Latin American and Caribbean studies from Bridgewater State University\, and with an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts\, Boston. \nCarter is founder of The Next Generation and You. He has planned 90 minutes of activities and discussion to promote healthy minds and well-being while connecting with the natural environment for relaxation and stress reduction\, using simple materials anyone can find at home. Each activity is 5 to 7 minutes long\, helping all to connect with the activities that “speak to them.” Listen. Watch. Record. Appreciate. SUMMARY:Plant Trees with A Frog House to Rehab Habitat and Capture Carbon!
DESCRIPTION:The Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) is the tallest conifer native to the North East. These majestic trees provide food and shelter for numerous birds and mammals\, from warblers to owls\, and red squirrels to black bears. An essential part of mixed conifer forests\, white pines help provide critical habitat for tree frogs\, toads\, and newts. Known as the Tree of Peace by the Haudenosaunee\, these giant trees once dominated the landscape\, but centuries of logging have all but removed them from Western New York. \nWith the support of the Town of Pittsford we plan to plant 10 Eastern white pine saplings (donated by Scout Troop 260 and nursed at A Frog House) in the Deblase Open Space where they will enjoy sunshine and well-drained soil. We will protect them from hungry deer as they grow with tree cages. \nThis is a perfect opportunity for scouts to begin to earn a Forestry Merit Badge | Boy Scouts of America (scouting.org and Girl Scouts Gold Award. \nA Frog House is doing this project in conjunction with Dr Jane Coggshall McConnochie\, and is included in the entire six week course called the Wildlife Wednesdays Habitat Restoration Class if you register for that. \nFor the one time event only\, please sign up here. Photo Credit Lindsay Graham\nThere’s been a strong lacework behind our yearly schedule: the annual four set activities and several added on our ever more beautiful grounds\, richer with native plants and flowers\, and a new pond that’s attracted the sweetest frogs. Margot never stops “frogging.” \nOur year has been full of social and political connections and actions\, informal introductions of A Frog House to passersby on the canal\, and public participation. \nWe’re finding that perfect balance of entertainment and froggy fam fun\, with rich and engaging environmental information\, and a community that sees the reasons to support our work. \nWhat Do We Teach?\nSave the Frogs Day at A Frog House on May 1. Former Mayor of the Village Pittsford Robert Corby\, presenting on sustainability in the 30 acres of public preserved land we treasure\, drew a good and engaged crowd. See a recording of his talk on our website. \nFor the worldwide celebration of Save the Frogs Day\, because of an unexpected illness\, we suddenly had no guest speaker/tour guide at 2 pm! We’re blessed with an enlarging group of local adult residents who want to know more about preserving regional lands\, and their kids who are enjoying games and adventures as they learn. \nThat interest blossomed in late June\, when so many powerful town activists came to hear Andy Smith of Stantec Environmental teach about wetland restoration\, assessing available resources and proposals to make the ponds and swamps more sustainable. \nWe are delighted that based on that talk\, Bill Smith has planned with the Parks Department to remove invasive plants and introduce natives this coming Spring. \nWhat is “Finishing” Family Froggy Fun?\n\nThank you Kerry Kriger\, founder of SAVE THE FROGS! for coming to our tiny but powerful spot in the universe on August 28. Photo credit Lindsay Graham. \nOur 4th Annual Froggy Birthday Party on August 7 was a perfect midsummer celebration of Frogs\, the Fact Filled Fun year to date and Founder Fass’ 82nd Fete and Fundraising Day with music\, an auction\, cake and games. Star musicians included Bonnie Abrams\, Matthew Fass\, Bernie Heveron\, and Karl Fleischman. \nWe may have thought we were done for the year\, but two more surprises came up. On August 25\, Kerry Kriger arrived for a break from Maryland\, and he generously gave his time talking to us about frogs at a pop up party we hadn’t planned. The first years are hard – building respect\, proving reliability\, accomplishing promised goals ­– as would-be supporters begin to trust that their gifts will make real change. \nThe community is seeing us now\, truly understanding our drive to make these tiny creatures the center of environmental intelligence\, sophisticated response to climate change\, repairing human-wildlife balance\, and reintroducing the spirit of nature into our lives. \nWe have a growing list of members and friends\, who support us financially and by volunteering and spreading the word. Her focus is to replace non native invasives with more pollinator friendly flora for the happy fauna\, including humans\, that visit A Frog House. \nThat means you can enjoy and learn from what she does for free\, except for whatever it will cost you to follow through on your own native landscaping plans. \nMargot also spends hours advocating and collaborating with other like minded people and groups. What she enjoys most is puttering around the grounds\, and meeting new friends who stop to come up and see what A Frog House has to offer. Come on up if you see our sign on A Frog House\, or any of us on the grounds. \nWhat Simple Ideas Can You Take Home?\n A sapling\, Tree of Heaven [or hell] (Ailanthus altissima)\, that you must remove immediately on seeing it. \nIn her free time A Frog House Founder writes for the edification of the community on various topics\, from frogs in Ecuador to invasive plants\, the importance of wetlands\, environmental justice\, pleas for sustainable practices\, including the elimination of pesticides and herbicides and chemical fertilizers. \nOur most recent blog has to do with the invasion of the Spotted Lantern Fly with its symbiotic partner the Ailanthus Tree. \nA Frog House has launched a petition\, which we would appreciate your signing here. Dr. Fass also goes to schools with people of any age to talk about the wonders and challenges of being a living frog. \nFor Giving Tuesday November 29\, Support A Frog House\n Map provided by the Town of Pittsford\, with hand captions added by Robert Corby \nTown Supervisor Bill Smith hinted that the name Frog Pond Trail for the main route through the newly designed Erie Canal Nature Preserve honors A Frog House. The four ponds probably were used to raise aquatic plants when Ward Scientific owned the property\, but now they are definitely frog ponds\, albeit eutrophying ones\, with adjacent wetlands. \nA Frog House has a plan to plant a sustainable garden (Forest in a Nutshell) designed by Patty Love of Barefoot Permaculture in the Village Arboretum\, approved by the board in 2020. As soon as they left\, I wrote Mike Boller\, who immediately replied with his agreement to participate. \nBrief presentations\, educational stations\, and a lively discussion of why all of us need to put sustainability at the top of our agendas will co-occur with fun contests and activities\, including contests for the best frog costume\, frog rock painting\, frog pumpkin carving\, face painting and a raffle\, with prizes! Music\, dancing\, and refreshments too. \n \n\nRegister \nPlease register by October 28 at midnight so we can plan refreshments and materials.
