Exploring the Wonders of Vernal Pools

Welcome to the fascinating world of vernal pools! I’m Tom Biebighauser, a wildlife biologist and wetland ecologist with over 20 years of experience restoring these unique ecosystems across North America and beyond. Tonight, I’m excited to share insights about vernal pools—those magical, ephemeral wetlands that support a vibrant array of wildlife.

What Are Vernal Pools?

Vernal pools, also known as vernal ponds, ephemeral wetlands, or seasonal wetlands, are wetland areas that dry up at certain times of the year. These remarkable features typically fill with water during the spring, thanks to heavy rains and snowmelt, and then dry out by fall. Think of them as large puddles, teeming with life during their wet phases.

The vernal pool you see here was restored in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky in 2006. It’s an excellent example of how these pools can be rejuvenated to support diverse plant and animal life.

Diversity of Life in Vernal Pools

Vernal pools are exciting places to visit, full of wildlife that you won’t find elsewhere. The shallow water and sunlight create a unique habitat, making these areas perfect for exploration, especially for children. They provide safe spaces to discover nature without the danger of deep water or muddy bottoms.

When you visit a vernal pool, you might spot wood ducks, which are among the most beautiful waterfowl on Earth. The males boast vibrant colors and are drawn to vernal pools due to the abundant food sources. These pools provide a buffet of invertebrates and seeds, perfect for ducklings to grow strong and healthy.

In addition to ducks, white-tailed deer are frequent visitors. They not only drink from these pools but also consume the aquatic plants, which are rich in sodium and potassium—nutrients that are crucial for their health, especially for nursing females.

Unique Wildlife of Vernal Pools

Vernal pools are vital habitats for many species that depend on them for survival. For instance, the rusty blackbird, a species that has been declining across North America, relies on these wetlands for food and nesting sites.

Bats also utilize vernal pools, often swooping low to drink while flying. When I used to trap bats, we would find them with wet chins, evidence of their drinking habits.

Who doesn’t love turtles? The Eastern box turtle is another species that benefits from vernal pools, using them for food, water, and shelter. During hot summer days, they can burrow into the mud to cool down, and they may even hibernate there during winter.

Floral Diversity Around Vernal Pools

Vernal pools aren’t just about the animals; they also support a rich variety of plant life. For example, rosemallow, also known as hibiscus, grows along the edges of these pools. Historically, the juices from this plant were used to make marshmallows!

Cardinal flowers, named for their vibrant red colors reminiscent of the robes worn by Catholic cardinals, thrive in the moist soil around these pools. Similarly, the plant known as bidens, or beggar’s tick, provides essential resources for pollinators like bees and butterflies.

The Importance of Biodiversity

The unique ecosystem of vernal pools supports a plethora of wildlife due to the absence of fish. Fish populations can drastically reduce the diversity of amphibians and invertebrates because they prey on their eggs and larvae. In contrast, the lack of fish in vernal pools allows for a rich diversity of frogs, toads, and salamanders to thrive.

For instance, the spring peeper, a small frog recognizable by the X shape on its back, breeds in these pools. Similarly, the marbled salamander lays its eggs in the dry pool in fall, waiting for the spring rains to fill the pool and allow the larvae to hatch.

Restoration Efforts and Community Involvement

Vernal pools can be built or restored, providing critical habitats for wildlife. For example, we restored a vernal pool in a farm field in Kentucky to support a variety of plants and animals. This effort has proven successful, attracting numerous species to the area.

Community involvement plays a significant role in these restoration projects. Schools and local groups often participate in building vernal pools, creating educational opportunities for students to learn about ecology and conservation firsthand.

Challenges Facing Vernal Pools

Despite their importance, vernal pools face numerous challenges. Climate change can affect their water levels and the timing of seasonal fills, impacting the species that depend on them. For instance, if a pool dries too early, it can strand larvae and disrupt their development.

In places like King’s Gap State Park in Pennsylvania, researchers have observed changes in the vernal pools, prompting restoration efforts to ensure these habitats continue to thrive.
