Volunteers Needed: Help Plant a Tiny Food Forest

Join us at the Robert C. Corby Arboretum and Wildlife Sanctuary to create a Permaculture Sustainable Tiny Food Forest.

The garden will be planted at the top of the path linking the new lower vernal pond with the new upper meadow ponds, creating a beautiful focal point for visitors.
Dress for the weather, bring a hat, sunscreen and bug spray if you need them.
Work Schedule
September 30: 1–5 pm
Bring a large bucket, garden gloves, shovels, trowels, kneeling pads.

Continue to dig out roots of dried weeds

Pick up the rocks under these roots

Mark planting holes with cardboard and spikes

If soil is gravelly, dig pockets 12–18 inches deep and stockpile gravel separately.

Start to name cardboard pieces with markers to match our design
October 3: 10 am to 5 pm

Bring preferably a wheelbarrow or large bucket, garden gloves, shovels, trowels, kneeling pads.

Delivery of topsoil compost mixture and mulch.

Spread topsoil compost mixture.

Lay down named cardboard pieces at marked planting sites

Double-check spacing.

Cut X-shaped slits through cardboard at each planting spot, reflag
-
Stage plants near flagged holes (in pots).
-
Fill each planting hole with compost or topsoil.
-
Mix lightly with native soil to avoid pot effect.
-
Water soil pockets to settle them.
-
Plant shrubs and perennials.
-
Firm soil around roots.
-
Water deeply after planting.

Fill in empty areas with pieces of cardboard

Apply 2–3 inches of hardwood mulch around each plant.

Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from stems.

Water again.
PUT UP FENCING
October 4, 5, 7: 1–5 pm

Walk site to check plants, watering, and mulch coverage.

Adjust stakes, labels, or flags.

Take photos for records and share with partners.
